Dishwashers Buying Guide
If you’ve come to the point where you’ve had enough of washing the dishes by hand, or you just want to replace the existing dishwasher in your home, Appliance Warehouse is sure to have the right product to meet your needs amongst our wide range of dishwashers. But do you know which option to choose? Do you want to buy a semi integrated dishwasher, or go for the fully integrated model? This buying guide is designed to answer all your questions about dishwashers and help you make an informed choice about which dishwasher best suits your specific needs.
What Type of Dishwasher Do I Want?
There are four different types of dishwashers to choose from. These are:
- • Freestanding dishwashers: This option will usually fit into any available space. For smaller kitchens, it can even provide an extra bench top area.
- • Built under dishwashers: Slots underneath the kitchen bench top. It typically comes supplied with a fascia.
- • Semi integrated dishwashers: Buy a semi integrated dishwasher and when it is installed it will be partially hidden into the decor with only the control panel visible.
- • Fully integrated dishwashers: From the outside, fully integrated dishwashers look just like any cupboard door below the sink. But in actuality it comes with a fascia that perfectly matches the existing surrounds to provide a completely seamless appearance.
Which type you choose depends largely on the space in your kitchen, the decor of the room, and the type of dishwasher you might be replacing.
Closely related to the type of dishwasher you choose is the capacity it is able to hold per wash. Dishwasher capacity is measured in ‘place settings’, which is the maximum amount of cutlery and crockery (dinner plates, soup plates, tea cups, saucers, dessert plates, glasses, utensils) the dishwasher can wash in one cycle. Larger models will typically be able to hold 12-14 place settings, midsized dishwashers about 9-10 place settings, and compact dishwashers in Australia around 6 place settings or less.
Energy and Water Efficiency
When you buy dishwashers in Australia, you’ll notice that they all come with a government approved energy rating. The rating goes to a maximum of 6 stars; the more stars a dishwasher has, the more energy efficient it will be. The more efficient models will generally be a little dearer upfront, but when you consider the savings you will make on your energy bills, that initial expense will more than pay for itself in the long run!
Similar to the energy rating is the Water Efficiency Labelling and Standards (WELS) system that was introduced by the Federal Government. This provides each dishwasher with a water conservation star rating. There’s a maximum of 6 stars, with the more stars indicating a greater ability to conserve water. Again, more stars often means the dishwasher will be dearer upfront, but it will help you to save a significant amount on your water bills over time.
Programs and Features
As with any electrical appliance, dishwashers come with a multitude of different features and programs to help make your life easier. Common programs will include normal, delicate and heavy wash cycles, drying with residual heat, fan assistance or heated air, delayed start options, and self cleaning filters.
